Shaving is an Art, Philosophy

Merkur Futur Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor #700
A clean shaved face is necessary for any man who takes dressing seriously. The face is the billboard of our personality that makes a statement to the world. Just like a real billboard, ours are also open to interpretation by each person we meet. Have you ever met someone who appeared sharp from afar, but when you got close to talk, your attention kept shifting to the unshaved patches during the conversation? People tend to notice the flaws on our face, teeth and hair immediately—it is like speck of dirt on a new pair of shoes.

Most off-the-self razor give a poor shaving experience. For many years, I didn’t realize the amount of flaws I carried with me when I stepped out of the house every morning. As an IT person, my shaving quality wasn’t that important to me. However, when my position transitioned from the IT department to Marketing, and started to attend meetings with sharply dressed female—a rarity in IT—the flaws on my face felt more apparent. I started using expansive electric shavers and 5-whatever-blade Gillette razors that always left more to be desired. Shaving the toughest areas such as the upper lip, the chin, and the most annoying, the neck was frustrating.

Only safety and straight razors can provide the best shaving experience and bring out the healthy, smooth skin one desires. Merkur Futur Double Edge Safety Razor #700 is the razor I use daily now. At $85 price tag, the Merkur Futur razor might mike you cringe and hide your wallet. It is a German engineered craftsmanship, unlike any other razors you’ve ever seen or held. The design looks like an alien spaceship. The heft feels perfect in hand, and is a joy to use. It is a great lifetime investment.

Day by day, you’ll feel more confident and appreciative of the quality of your facial presentation. However, I have to admit, using a safety or straight razor is an acquired taste, especially the straight razor. The shaving process is more like a ritual, and requires 20 to 30 minutes with the handle of art to complete the four steps of preparing, leathering, shaving and moisturizing. Once you see and feel the smoothness and evenness of a shave produced by a safety razor, you will never want to go back to anything else.

`O’mar~
